The beautiful aquamarine shines over a range of blue hues and arouses feelings of trust, friendship, sympathy, and harmony. Related to the emerald, the aquamarine is generally of a more consistent color and has fewer flaws. The most valuable color is a rich, clear blue, but all the other shades are also beautiful.

Not just a movie, but a gorgeous blue gem that will last long after the movie has been forgotten. The color varies over a range of light blue and makes an excellent complement to a variety of fashions and, of course, blue eyes.

Aquamarine jewelry comes in a vareity of cuts and styles since the color, dazzle, and workability of the gem seems to bring out the best in gem cutters. They exercise their creativity to bring about new gem cuts to best show off this gem's wonderful color.

Related to the Emarald, the aquamarine tends to be of more consistent quality and is quite durable. While the color ranges from a pale blue to a deep sea blue, and some specimens show hints of green, it is the richest blue that brings the highest price.

All the usualy standards apply when looking at aquamarine jewelry. Meaning that the better the cut, color, size, etc. the better then gem (and the more you'll pay.) The best aquamarines are very clear and a vivid blue, though a skilled gem cutter can make inclusions a feature, rather than a defect.

Of course, your favorite jewelry store will likely have a variety of aquamarine rings, wrapped in gold, solver, or platinum, in a variety of price ranges.

The biggest aquamarine ever mined was found at the city of Marambaia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 1910. It weighed over 110 kg (close to 250 pounds,) and its dimensions were 48.5 cm long and 42 cm in diameter (almost 2 feet wide. That's quite a rock.) How'd you like to have that for your aquamarine pendant?  Well ok, it's a tad heavy and would make a whole bunch of aquamarine pendants... Of course, most aquamarine comes in a much more manageable size.

Aquamarine gem stone lore:

  • Aquamarine is the birthstone for March and is also the gemstone for the 19th Anniversary.
  • People in the Middle Ages thought that aquamarine could magically overcome the effects of poison. Aquamarine also reminds one of the ocean of love and mercy. It can help one understand difficult situations from a love-filled viewpoint.

Ancient sailors traveled with aquamarine crystals, believing that it would ensure a safe passage, and often slept with the stones under their pillow to ensure sound sleep. They believed the siren’s (mermaid) fish-like lower body was made of aquamarine. A nice set of aquamarine earrings would be easy to carry and would provide you with safe passage.
